Thinking about a study exchange? Find out when to apply, how to get ready and what to expect if you're offered a place.
How to apply
Applications for study exchanges are currently closed.
You’ll be able to apply later this year for exchanges taking place during the 2026–27 academic year.
Before you apply
To get ready for your application, we recommend:
- Reading the application guidance in the Global opportunities section on Blackboard
- Exploring the list of host universities and destinations also available in the Global opportunities section
- Reviewing module catalogues on Blackboard to check what you could study at each university
- Finding out who your Academic Exchange Coordinator is – they can support you through the process
- Considering costs like accommodation, travel, insurance and visa fees
- Checking visa requirements – for destinations like the USA, you may need to show proof of financial support
We’ll do our best to allocate you one of your top three choices, but places aren’t guaranteed.
Who can apply
You’re eligible if:
- You’re a fully enrolled student on a course that includes a compulsory or optional placement abroad
- You’re in good academic standing (usually an average of 55% or above)
- You meet the academic progression requirements for the year you plan to go abroad
Please note:
- If you withdraw from your studies or are excluded, your exchange place will be withdrawn
- If you have to retake a module or complete a referral, your place may be withdrawn
- If your programme starts in July or August (eg in the Southern Hemisphere), referrals may prevent you from taking up your place
- You must apply by the deadline and choose universities that are open to your area of study
- You’ll need to meet any language requirements – especially if the teaching language isn’t English
- If offered a place, you’ll need to agree to our exchange terms and conditions
If you have additional support needs
Speak to your Academic Exchange Coordinator early on to talk about your needs.

Successful applications
If you're selected, you’ll need to submit a second application to the host university – the Student Mobility Team will guide you through these next steps.
